Special care counselling glossary

This glossary contains some words who are related to my future job, the special care counselling. I chose words that are related to problems that can be found as well as words that are related to the educator.

Adaptation
Noun
The process of changing to suit different conditions.
Example: In our life, we have to be in constant adaptation.

Autonomy
Noun
The condition or quality of being autonomous; independence.
Example: Our goal is to develop our client's autonomy to the maximum.

Behavior
Noun
Any action of an organism that changes its relationship to its environment.
Example: Our behavior affects or relationships with the surrounding people.

Coaching
Noun
Method of achieving set goals. The coach through dialogue helps the coachee (client) to correctly set a goal, to find the best way to achieve the goal and reveal hidden inner potential in a person. The coach does not say how to achieve success but asks questions through which the client himself finds the solution to his own tasks
Example: The coaching is informal and tailored to individual needs.

Creativity
Noun
The ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination.
Example: When we create an activity, we have to use our creativity.

Noun
The quality or state of being hard to do, deal with, or understand.
Example: The child has difficulty expressing himself.

Disability
Noun
Any continuing condition that restricts everyday activities. Which is attributable to an intellectual, psychiatric, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment or a combination of those impairments.
Example: With his disability, he has to move in a wheelchair.

Distress
Noun
Unhappiness or pain : suffering that affects the mind or body.
Example: The patient showed no obvious signs of distress.

Emotion
Noun
A strong feeling deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
Example: During a situation, a person may experience different emotions.

Empathy
Noun
The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.
Example: In the helping relationship, the empathy is an important notion.

The act or process of guiding someone or something.
Example: We can guide people towards possible solutions.

To give assistance or support. To make things more bearable.
Example: To give help to someone who has difficulties.

Intervention
Noun
The action of becoming intentionally involved in a situation, in order to improve it or prevent it from getting worse.
Example: I am intervening with a child who is angry.

Listen
Verb
To make an effort to hear something. To pay attention, heed.
Example: I listen to him carefully in order to understand his problem.

Adjective
Combining or involving more than one discipline or field of study.
Example: To create an intervention plan, we can work with a multidisciplinary team.

Observation
Noun
The act of noticing or paying attention.
Example: In our profession we are led to observe different facts.

Prevention
Noun
The act of preventing a hindrance, obstacle, or impediment.
Example: We do prevention with teenagers on drugs.

Rehabilitation
Noun
The action, process, or result of rehabilitating or of being rehabilitated: such as a restoration especially by therapeutic means to an improved condition of physical function.
Example: We can do rehabilitation with a person who has had a serious accident.

Social integration
Noun
The process where separate groups are combined to form a unified society. Integration implies coming together as a whole.
Example: An immigrant may need help with social integration.

Trust
Noun
To have confidence in something, or to believe in someone.
Example: I trust him.
